Pleased by the tapas of atri and anasuya, Datta appeared and conferred a boon that he would get adopted to them. Anasuya then said to swamy " swamy, you have given would that you will get adopted. But I would not be satisfied unless you are born in my womb." Datta din thought to established is divine appearance on earth forever showed his form of Dattatreya and blessed them.
This Dattatreya appeared in the month of kartika, second day of the waning fortnight on a Friday, under mrigasira star, at the time of sunrise.
On this day, Datta should be offered arghya thrice, sugarcane should be offered in oblation and food should be offered to sages.
